Microneedling

Introduction

Microneedling

It is common knowledge that with age comes many changes, and your skin is often the first visible proof of the “wear and tear” of time. Topical treatments can do some great things for your skin’s appearance, but in order to combat the more severe effects of aging, sometimes you need to go deeper to address the source. Microneedling is a form of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) that is a minimally invasive treatment that gently penetrates your skin to create a series of microchannels that stimulate collagen and elastin production to improve the appearance of your skin.

Dr. Cohn routinely sees Microneedling patients from all over Nassau County, Suffolk County, Long Island, and even from Manhattan. His boutique office is located in Smithtown, New York, making it a convenient destination for any Microneedling patients on the North Shore.

Microneedling Basics

What is Microneedling?

The way microneedling works is through the use of tiny needles that puncture the skin, stimulating the skin’s natural production of collagen which can often get reduced through the aging process. The Microneedling wand works to address acne scars, and wrinkles and can also firm and tone your skin. It is also said to stimulate the growth of hair in patients with Alopecia. It’s no secret why this is such a sought-after procedure by many female and male patients. Microneedling is said to rejuvenate and plump the skin with minimal discomfort and downtime, and it can be adjusted to fit each person’s needs.

Who are the best candidates for Microneedling?

You might be a great candidate for a Long Island Microneedling treatment if you fit the following parameters:

First Steps

What’s the first step?

If you are ready to get started, the first step is to call our Long Island practice to schedule a consultation with Dr. Cohn. He will take you through the process of microneedling, explain the techniques and equipment used, and assess your skin. Once he has determined whether you are a good candidate for the procedure, our patient coordinators are ready to help you and get you started on your journey.

Prior to the day of your treatment, Dr. Cohn may give you instructions to prepare your skin, such as avoiding certain topical ointments or lotions.  Before your scheduled appointment, Dr. Cohn and his team will help you prepare by giving instructions to avoid certain skin products and lotions that could hinder the microneedling process.

What to expect on the day of a Microneedling treatment

On the day of your appointment, the first step is to clean the skin and apply a topical numbing agent, allowing 30-45 minutes for it to set in.

Next, Dr. Cohn will begin using the hand-held roller to make the wounds in your skin using the tiny needles attached to the device. The length of these needles can be changed based on the skin issues you are looking to treat and how deep the wound punctures need to be. Dr. Cohn rolls it slowly and gently across your skin as the needles pulse up and down. Throughout the process, you will feel a warming or scratching sensation. Deeper microneedling can cause a little bleeding, but rest assured this is normal and nothing serious to be alarmed about. It is all part of the process and helps to stimulate collagen.

The entire process can be as short as 15 minutes, or up to 1 hour, based on the treatment plan designed to address your skin conditions. Once you are done, you are free to resume your regular day without having to schedule downtime.

Microneedling recovery

Because Microneedling is less invasive than plastic surgery, you won’t need to set aside a specific amount of time for recovery afterward. Following the procedure, you may experience skin irritation and redness for a few days, which is a natural reaction to the micro-injuries caused by the needles.

Your regular work or school routine can resume right after the procedure. But we do have some guidelines to aid in the longevity of your results. Give your skin up to a week before wearing heavy makeup or spending a lot of time in the sun. Ongoing, wearing sunscreen and being mindful about the products you use on your skin will enable you to get the most out of your Microneedling treatment.
