Introduction

Functional Rhinoplasty

Most people think of Rhinoplasty as a way to improve their nasal appearance by getting rid of unwanted bumps, adjusting the size of the nose, and creating a better profile. Cosmetic Rhinoplasty can do wonders for a patient’s self-confidence, but nose surgery offers benefits that go beyond just making you look good. While it can be performed in conjunction with cosmetic rhinoplasty, Functional Rhinoplasty allows patients who have suffered from injury, deformity, and dysfunction to breathe easier by altering the nasal airways.

Dr. Cohn routinely sees Functional Rhinoplasty patients from all over Nassau County, Suffolk County, Long Island, and even from Manhattan. His boutique office is located in Smithtown, New York, making it a convenient destination for any Functional Rhinoplasty patients on the North Shore.

The first step in getting a Functional Rhinoplasty in the Long Island area is to contact Cohn Plastic Surgery. When you come in for this appointment, you will meet with Jason Cohn, M.D. who will examine your nose, ask you questions about your medical history and lifestyle, and answer any questions that you may have. It’s important to be open and honest with Dr. Cohn during your Functional Rhinoplasty consultation as this will not only allow him to make informed decisions that are tailored to your needs but will also prevent unnecessary risks. If you are interested in moving forward with the surgery, Dr. Cohn will create your procedure plan and our Patient Coordinator will schedule your surgical date and time. We will provide you with some necessary instructions to follow that will make your procedure safer and more successful.

What to expect on the day of Functional Rhinoplasty surgery

On the day of your Functional Rhinoplasty procedure, you will meet with Dr. Cohn to review the steps of the procedure one more time and then meet with our Anesthesiologist, who will ask you some medical questions before administering your anesthesia, which can be either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation.

Dr. Cohn can use a variety of techniques during your surgery, including breaking and resetting the nasal bones, grafting cartilage to change internal structures, or even changing the size and shape of the nostrils. Most of the incisions will be able to be performed through the inside of your nose, but if Dr. Cohn needs to perform an incision externally, he will try to hide them in the natural contours of your nose.

Depending on the extent of your surgery, it should last between two and four hours.

Functional Rhinoplasty recovery

After you wake up from your Functional Rhinoplasty surgery, your nose will have an external splint and a “mustache” dressing. Your face will most likely feel sore. You will have some splints inside of your nose, which will keep the tissues intact during the healing process. You will be given a prescription for pain medication some antibiotics and post-operative instructions on how to care for yourself. The bandages are usually removed seven days after surgery.

During the days and weeks following nose surgery, you should keep your head elevated when sleeping and avoid smoking, blowing your nose, and participating in strenuous physical activities. Our team will closely monitor your healing process, with the expectation that you return the following day or two so that any bandages can be redressed and Dr. Cohn can observe your initial recovery.

You will most likely be able to return to your daily routine within 10 days. Please note that while your nose will heal fully within a few weeks, the results will become visible gradually, and the outcome may not be evident for up to 12 months.
