Introduction

Dermabrasion

Minor skin imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and pigmentation problems can make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. What if we told you that by injuring your skin in a controlled setting, you can actually improve your skin’s appearance and rid yourself of these skin conditions in as little as one treatment? With Dermabrasion, our team can remove and level the upper layer of skin (epidermis) to give you a refreshed glow and clearer skin.

Dr. Cohn routinely sees Dermabrasion patients from all over Nassau County, Suffolk County, Long Island, and even Manhattan. His boutique office is located in Smithtown, New York, making it a convenient destination for any Dermabrasion patients on the North Shore.

Dermabrasion Basics

What is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a skin-resurfacing procedure that uses a rapidly rotating device to remove the outer layer of skin. The skin that grows back is usually smoother. Dermabrasion can decrease the appearance of fine facial lines and improve the look of many skin flaws, including acne scars, scars from surgery, age spots, and wrinkles. Dermabrasion, sometimes referred to as dermaplaning, helps to “refinish” the skin’s top layers through a method of controlled surgical scraping. The treatments soften the sharp edges of surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother appearance.

Dermabrasion is different from Microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion only removes dead or dying skin, dermabrasion goes deeper and removes layers of the skin that are still viable (alive). Dermabrasion produces more dramatic results compared to microdermabrasion. It is of greater benefit to patients dealing with more severe skin issues such as intense pigmentation, acne scarring, or deeper wrinkles.

Who are the best candidates for Dermabrasion?

People of all ages, including children, can get dermabrasion. However, if you’re on the older side, keep in mind that you might heal slower than expected.

*Two factors may keep you from eligibility: skin type and medical history. If you are Asian, Black, or have a dark complexion in general, this treatment could permanently discolor your skin. You might not want to risk dermabrasion.

If you have medical conditions like allergic rashes, skin reactions, fever blisters, or cold sores, you could risk a flare-up. Also, if your acne is ongoing, dermabrasion isn’t an option because there’s a risk of infection. Infection is also a risk if you’ve had a bad burn, chemical peel, or if you’ve had radiation treatments.

What are the benefits of Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion was first developed to lessen acne scars and pox marks. Today, it’s also used to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, remove tattoos, and reverse sun damage. Not every skin condition can benefit from dermabrasion, but many can. Dermabrasion can be used to treat or remove the following:

  • Scars caused by acne, surgery, or injuries
  • Fine wrinkles, especially those around the mouth
  • Sun-damaged skin, including age spots
  • Tattoos
  • Swelling and redness of the nose (rhinophyma)
  • Potentially precancerous skin patches

First Steps

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting Dermabrasion in Long Island is to book a consultation with Dr. Cohn. Our patient coordinators are ready to help you and get you started on your journey. By scheduling a consultation, you will get to meet Dr. Cohn, learn more about what Dermabrasion involves, and decide whether this is the right procedure for you.

Prior to your treatment, Dr. Cohn will discuss your medical history and assess your skin to see if any measures need to be taken to prepare for the procedure. You may be advised to avoid certain medications and arrange for transportation to and from the clinic, depending on how intense the treatment will be.

What to expect on the day of Dermabrasion treatment

On the day of your appointment, you will begin by washing your face. Do not apply any makeup or facial creams. Wear clothes that you don’t have to pull over your head because you’ll have a facial dressing applied after your procedure.

Dr. Cohn will begin by giving you anesthesia or sedation to decrease sensation, minimizing discomfort and pain

During the procedure, Dr. Cohn moves a small motorized device across the skin with constant, gentle pressure. The device has an abrasive wheel or brush for a tip that removes the outer skin layers. The scraping continues until the provider reaches the safest level that will make the scar or wrinkle less visible.

Dermabrasion can take a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on how much skin is being treated. If you have deep scarring or you’re having a large amount of skin treated, you might have dermabrasion done more than once or in stages.

Once the treatment is complete, Dr. Cohn may then treat the skin in a number of ways, including ointment, a wet or waxy dressing, dry treatment, or some combination of these.

Dermabrasion Recovery

After dermabrasion, treated skin will be covered with a moist, non-stick dressing. You will receive self-care instructions to follow at home and you might be given prescription pain medication.

You’ll likely need to schedule a checkup soon after treatment so that your provider can examine your skin and change your dressing.

At home, change your dressing as directed by Dr. Cohn. They will also let you know when you can begin regularly cleaning the treated area and applying protective ointments. Your self-care instructions will vary depending on the extent of your procedure.

Most patients will experience red or swollen skin, itching or tingling sensation, and scab as the skin begins to heal.
