Liposuction Basics

What is a Neck & Chin Liposuction?

Neck & Chin contouring is a minimally invasive process that uses liposuction to minimize the double-chin appearance and provide you with a smoother, firmer, and more defined V-shape to anchor your face. The procedure can improve your facial appearance by treating a thick, wrinkled, or sagging neckline for a dramatically younger look.

Who Are The Best Candidates For Neck & Chin Liposuction?

At Cohn Plastic Surgery, we believe the best candidates for Neck & Chin Liposuction in Long Island are those patients with the following characteristics:

  • Currently at their desired weight
  • Have good skin elasticity
  • In overall good health
  • Keeps a positive attitude throughout the consultation, procedure, and recovery

First Steps

What’s the first step?

If you are interested in submental liposuction in the Long Island area, the first step is to schedule your consultation with Dr. Jason Cohn. When you come in for your appointment, you will be able to ask any questions about the procedure, address your areas of concern, and learn about potential options to help you achieve your desired aesthetic goals.

Dr. Cohn will examine your chin, neck, and the rest of your face, as well as ask you questions about your lifestyle and medical history. Please be completely open and honest when having any part of your discussion. The information you provide will help prevent unnecessary risks and achieve the best possible outcome.
Once you have discussed every aspect of your surgery, Dr. Cohn will create your surgical plan. If you are satisfied with this plan, you will then meet with our Patient Coordinator to schedule the day of your procedure and you will be provided with some instructions to follow that will help make your results as successful as possible.

What to expect on the day of Neck & Chin Liposuction surgery

On the day of your Neck/Chin liposuction, it will be performed under local anesthesia but can be done under general anesthesia if you and Dr. Cohn feel it’s a better option.

Dr. Cohn will begin your procedure by treating the entire treatment area with a numbing medication that will anesthetize the area, minimize bleeding, and help suspend the fat for suctioning. She will make about ½ inch incisions just underneath the chin and in the creases below each ear lobe. While Dr. Cohn can make a singular incision underneath your chin, multiple incisions allow for different angles which can help Dr. Cohn reach difficult-to-reach areas and achieve a more even result.

The Liposuction portion is then performed through the incisions with a very thin rod called a cannula that is connected to the suction machine and passed evenly throughout the treatment zones. The cannula will be gently used to scrape loose the stubborn fat and suction it out.

Once she is finished, Dr. Cohn will close each incision with one or two small sutures. Gauze pads are placed over the incisions as some watery blood-tinged leakage is expected from those areas during the first 24 hours, and a soft, elastic compression garment will be applied to prevent excessive swelling.

This procedure will take approximately one hour to complete but will vary depending on your personal aesthetic needs.

Neck & Chin Liposuction Recovery

After your surgery is complete, we will monitor you in our recovery room until Dr. Cohn releases you that same day. You may still feel the effects of the numbing medication, which is why we encourage our patients to find a family member or friend to provide them with a ride home.

Once the medication wears off within a few hours, you can expect to experience a dull aching soreness. Before you leave, you will be provided with a very small amount of mild pain medication and heavier prescription pain medication should you need it.

After the first 24 hours post-surgery, you will be able to remove the compression dressing for the first time. You will be taught how to easily reapply the compression bandage with some foam for an even distribution of pressure. You will need to continue to wear the bandage day and night for about a week, but you can remove it twice a day for 30 minutes to shower and allow your skin to breathe.

Patients are usually able to return to most of their activities the day after surgery as long as they don’t require lifting over 15 lbs., bending over, being upside down, or other types of physical strain. We encourage our patients to begin walking when they are comfortable but should avoid jogging for at least a week to prevent any pressure of the bounce on the facial area.

Dr. Cohn will discuss your potential activity levels after each follow-up appointment which can change with every patient.
