Cheek Implant Basics

What are Cheek Implants?

Cheek implants in Long Island are solid pieces of an artificial material that are surgically added to your existing cheek line. Cheek implants enhance the definition and fullness of your cheeks. Dr. Cohn inserts cheek implants above or at your cheekbone. Cheek implants are commonly made of medical-grade silicone or porous polyethylene (Medpor®). These are synthetic materials that have been around for decades. The procedure provides a permanent solution for flat or less defined cheeks.

Cheek implants come in three types:

  • Submalar implants: Submalar refers to the beginning of your cheekbones, beneath your eyes. Your plastic surgeon places these implants above your cheekbones to improve a sunken appearance.
  • Malar implants: A malar implant — inserted below the submalar — creates an angular, more defined bone structure. This cheek implant is common among people in their 20s and 30s.
  • Combination: You can opt to have both a submalar and malar implant during one procedure to give your face definition and volume.

Cheek implants are more common among women. But men also choose to get cheek implants.

Who are the best candidates for the Cheek Implant procedure?

Dr. Cohn will ask you about your medical history and your goals to see if cheek implants are right for you. People who are typically good candidates for cheek implants:

  • Regularly smoke or are unable to quit before the procedure.

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting a Cheek Implant in Long Island is to book a consultation with Dr. Cohn. Our patient coordinators are ready to help you and get you started on your journey. By scheduling a consultation, you will get to meet Dr. Cohn, learn more about what a Cheek Implant treatment involves, and decide whether this is the right procedure for you.

Before the day of your surgery, Dr. Cohn will take photos and map out the exact treatment site on your face. He may also advise you to fast for a certain amount of time or avoid certain medications.

What to expect on the day of Cheek Implant surgery

On the day of your surgery, Dr. Cohn will walk you through the procedure as discussed in your consultation.

The first step is to administer anesthesia, to numb the area and minimize discomfort. Most Cheek Implant surgeries are performed with General Anesthesia, allowing you to be asleep during the entire procedure.

Once the anesthesia is working, Dr. Cohn will then cut (incision) inside your mouth or under your eyelid. The location depends on the type of cheek implant.

Next, he will fit the implant into place on your cheek. The implant will be secured to your cheekbone. Finally, he will close the incision with stitches.

Once the anesthesia has worn off, you will be taken into a recovery area, while Dr. Cohn and his team give you all the information you will need on your return home. Cheek implant surgery typically takes up to an hour, and we strongly advise you to arrange transportation to and from our clinic on the day of your surgery.

Cheek Implant recovery

You’ll stay in the recovery area for a few hours and then be discharged home. It’s normal to feel soreness or tightness in your cheeks after your procedure.

Dr. Cohn will give you specific instructions for incision care. For example, if the procedure involved an incision inside of your mouth, you might have to stick to a liquid diet for up to a week or use a special rinse. You’ll also want to avoid sleeping on your face for a few weeks after surgery.

Dr. Cohn and his team will also schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure you’re healing as you should.
