Introduction

Otoplasty

We’ve all heard the one-liners about people with prominent ears. But for those people, those statements can be a source of shame or deep embarrassment. We cannot choose our genetics, but in this day and age, we can decide whether to make adjustments to our appearance, especially when we know it can improve our self-esteem and self-worth. The good news is that Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, can be a solution to your problem.

Dr. Cohn routinely sees Otoplasty patients from all over Nassau County, Suffolk County, Long Island, and even from Manhattan. His boutique office is located in Smithtown, New York, making it a convenient destination for any Otoplasty patients on the North Shore.

Otoplasty Basics

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty can also be referred to as Ear Surgery. It is a surgical procedure designed to adjust the shape, position, or size of the ears. Otoplasty can also be sought out to address or correct a birth defect of the ear structure. While Otoplasty can be performed on all types of patients and a range of ages, you must be 5 years older and above, which is the age your ears have completed their development. Typically done on both ears simultaneously to create a symmetrical look on your face, Otoplasty won’t change the location of your ears or impact your hearing. This surgery is mostly sought out by patients looking to address cosmetic issues.

Who are the best candidates for an Otoplasty procedure?

To determine whether Otoplasty is the right procedure for you, we typically assess each patient for the following factors:

  • Healthy individuals who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for Otoplasty
  • Individuals with realistic goals
  • Individuals who are looking for a cosmetic solution to their concerns
  • Nonsmokers

To find out whether you are a good candidate for Otoplasty, call us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Cohn, who will take the time to assess your goals and concerns before making a determination.

What are the benefits of Otoplasty?

Several benefits result from an Otoplasty procedure, which addresses the following issues:

  • Pinning back overly large ears
  • Protruding ears occurring on one or both sides in varying degrees
  • Adult dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery
  • Improvement of self-esteem
  • Improved facial symmetry

Your image and self-worth are yours to control, and Dr. Cohn recommends all prospective patients choose this procedure for personal reasons only. To learn more about how Otoplasty can benefit you, get in touch to schedule a consultation.

First Steps

What’s the first step?

When you have decided to pursue Otoplasty, the first step is to give us a call and schedule a consultation. During this session, you will meet with Dr. Cohn, learn more details about what Otoplasty surgery involves, and share your concerns and goals with him. Dr. Cohn will assess the issues about your ears and create a surgical plan to address these. Once he is satisfied that you are a good candidate for this procedure, you will be contacted by our patient coordinators who will help you schedule your surgery.

What to expect on the day of Otoplasty surgery

Before your surgical appointment, you will be given a list of pre-operative instructions that will prepare you for the procedure. These instructions can include (but are not limited to) avoiding certain types of medications or fasting for a specific amount of time.

When you arrive at our inviting clinic for your Otoplasty procedure, you will be greeted by our warm and friendly staff who will get you prepared for the surgery. Dr. Cohn will greet you and  explain the techniques he will be using so you feel comfortable and assured about the entire process.

First, anesthesia will be administered to make you comfortable and minimize any pain.

Once the anesthesia has set in, Dr. Cohn will begin by making the incisions as determined in your consultation. The incisions can be at the front of the ear crease or on the back, based on the specific issues he will be addressing. The fold of the ear will be pinned back into its new position using sutures to keep the ear in place.

Finally, the incisions will be closed to complete the surgery. Bandages will be applied to help keep the ears in place while the incisions heal and to prevent any impact that could damage the wound in any way.

Otoplasty recovery

Once your surgery is complete, Dr. Cohn’s team of caring medical staff will take you into a dedicated recovery area. There, you will be given a complete list of guidelines about the recovery process and what to expect. We recommend all Otoplasty patients arrange transport to and from our clinic in Long Island so they can adequately rest after their procedure.

During the recovery stage at home, it is normal to experience itching under the bandage, but it is vitally important you don’t try to scratch or remove the bandages before the wound has fully healed. We know it can be a frustrating feeling not to be able to itch a scratch! But if you do, it can potentially reopen your wound and require additional surgery to correct this.

It is a good idea to wear button-up clothing to avoid any over-the-head apparel that could bump or impact your sutures. Sleeping on your back is advised so there is no temptation to roll onto your ears while they are still very tender.

If you experience mild pain or swelling after surgery, which is common, Dr. Cohn will advise on the best pain management or other effective methods to alleviate pain.
